Orthoceras (which means “straight horn”) refers to a group of cephalopods that existed from 360-470 million years ago in Europe and North America. Unlike the ammonites, these creatures had a shell that was straight (similar in look to a cone or a space rocket ship). These were the most advanced invertebrates of their time period, with a complex central nervous system and the ability to squirt water via a jet-propulsion that allowed them to move about the ocean floor. These fossils (beautifully smoothed and rounded to be kept in the material they were found in) will no doubt be an eye-catcher to anyone walking into your office, classroom or family room!
