According to Wikipedia, electrolysis is the passage of an electric current through an ionic substance that is either molten or dissolved in a suitable solvent, resulting in chemical reactions at the electrodes and separation of materials. The main components required to achieve electrolysis are:

• A liquid containing mobile ions - an electrolyte
• An external source of direct electric current
• Two solid rods or plates known as electrodes

This simple electrolysis apparatus demonstrates the principle as efficiently as other more expensive apparatus. It consists of a plastic container with mounted carbon electrodes. The bottom of the container has cut-outs so that leads can be connected to the electrodes with ease. It also includes two alligator clip leads (1 red,1 black), two graduated test tubes and an instruction manual. Works on 12V DC.  An excellent experiment for demonstrating purposes, we highly recommend this for use in any chemistry classroom! Can also be used for a science fair project.
